What cookies DictArena uses and why.

1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. They help the site remember your preferences and understand how you interact with it. DictArena also uses localStorage and sessionStorage — browser storage mechanisms that work similarly to cookies but are never sent to our servers automatically. The DictArena mobile app keeps the same kind of data on your phone (sign-in tokens in the device's secure storage), not in browser cookies.
2. Strictly Necessary
These are required for DictArena to function. You cannot opt out of them.
dictarena_anon_id
localStorage · Persistent
A random ID that identifies your anonymous session. Used to enforce solo session limits without requiring an account.
dictarena_display_name
localStorage / sessionStorage · Persistent
Stores the display name you entered so you don't have to retype it on the next visit.
dictarena_country_code
localStorage · Persistent
Your country (e.g. 'FR'), chosen when you set up your player, used to show your flag on leaderboards.
dictarena_access_token
localStorage + HTTP cookie · Until sign-out or expiry
JWT authentication token for registered accounts. Stored in localStorage and also set as an HTTP cookie for server-side authentication. Keeps you logged in across sessions.
dictarena_refresh_token
localStorage · Until sign-out
Renews your sign-in token so you stay signed in.
dictarena_player
localStorage · Until sign-out
A copy of your player profile (name, username, country, plan) so pages load without waiting for the server.
dictarena_lang
localStorage (dictarena.com) · Persistent
The language you chose for this website.
dictarena_waitlist_email
localStorage (dictarena.com) · Persistent
Remembers that you joined the paid-plan waitlist, so you are not asked again.
DictArena also uses additional localStorage keys for game preferences, language settings, usage counters, and local session cache. These are stored only on your device and are never sent to our servers. They are cleared when you clear your browser data.
3. Analytics (Optional)
We use Vercel Analytics (on the website and the web app) and Vercel Speed Insights (on the web app) to understand how players use the platform. These tools collect:
- Page views per route
- Country and device type (aggregated, not individual)
- Core Web Vitals performance metrics
Vercel Analytics is privacy-friendly by design — it does not use third-party cookies or fingerprinting, and does not track individuals across sites. No data is sold to advertisers.
4. Managing Cookies
You can clear browser storage and cookies at any time through your browser settings. Note that clearing strictly necessary items (such as your anonymous ID or display name) will reset your session limits and preferences.
Most browsers allow you to block third-party cookies. This will not affect DictArena's core functionality since we do not rely on third-party cookies for gameplay.
5. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy when we add new features or services. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version. Continued use of DictArena after any update constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
